Tilt Garage Doors

These days, Tilt Garage Doors are the least-common garage door in use in Australia, due to the popularity of sectional and roller door designs. However, they still have a place when talking about modern garage door options, and their versatility and unique features may make them the best choice for your home’s needs.

How Tilt Garage Doors Differ

Tilt garage doors differ from the other mentioned designs in that they fold upwards and outwards, before coming to rest inside your garage. This is achieved by having two pivoting arms lift the door when you activate it to open.

There are two types of tilt garage doors typically in use: the track-type and the jamb-type.

Track-type tilt doors are similar to sectional doors, in that the door travels along and eventually rests on a track that is affixed to your garage’s ceiling. These tracks make the door more stable and can support heavier weights than jamb-type doors.

Jamb-type doors are supported by jambs on either side of the door that guide it into an open position, meaning that the door does not fully retract inside of the garage, even when it is completely open, which is ideal for smaller garages.

Why Choose a Tilt Garage Door?

Our customers may prefer the design of a tilt garage door for a number of reasons. Most commonly, tilt garage doors are chosen because of their minimal clearance requirements for their installation. This makes them the best fit for many garages where it would otherwise be too tight or difficult to install a roller or sectional garage door system.

Many people choose them for their aesthetic appeal as well. Tilt doors are considered the “architect’s door”, as their simple construction of just one panel make them a far more customisable choice than other garage door models. Where other garage doors can be inoffensive, tilt doors can become a statement piece on the outside of your home.

The ability to construct them out of wood or metal means that you’re almost certain to find a style that meets your unique design needs and enhances the look of your home. The relative simplicity of their mechanism also allows for the use of heavier materials than would be otherwise possible. It is also possible to install a window in a tilt garage door, if this is a design choice you prefer.
